François Morel, founder of Quelle Est Belle Company, has been developing bird calls for more than 40 years. Each whistle is crafted from sustainable local wood sourced near his atelier, where he creates his unique and beautiful calls that help us learn to communicate with birds.
We have had the honour of collaborating with François to develop lacquered whistles using an Urushi lacquering process influenced by techniques found in Japan and China. The resin is moisture-resistant, mould-resistant, and food-safe. Our choice of Urushi came from our research and development into finding a non-toxic paint free from harsh chemicals. Each whistle is hand painted in BOWER’s small atelier and takes around one month to cure and set.

Chiffchaff
The chiffchaff is a small, greenish-brown warbler with dark legs and a distinctive tail-wagging movement, often found in woodlands, parks, and gardens. Its call is a simple, soft, rounded two-syllable “chiff-chaff, chiff-chaff” repeated in quick succession. Its beautiful, uplifting song has given it a well-deserved folkloric association with freedom, hope, and renewal.
