François Morel, founder of Quelle Est Belle Company, has been developing bird calls for more than 40 years. Each whistle is crafted from sustainable local wood sourced near his atelier, where he creates his unique and beautiful calls that help us learn to communicate with birds.
We have had the honour of collaborating with François to develop lacquered whistles using an Urushi lacquering process influenced by techniques found in Japan and China. The resin is moisture-resistant, mould-resistant, and food-safe. Our choice of Urushi came from our research and development into finding a non-toxic paint free from harsh chemicals. Each whistle is hand painted in BOWER’s small atelier and takes around one month to cure and set.

Cuckoo
“Oh, the cuckoo, she’s a pretty bird; she sings as she flies
She bringeth good tidings; she telleth no lies
She sucketh white flowers for to keep her voice clear
And the more she singeth “cuckoo” the summer draweth near”
For Europeans, the cuckoo is a bird of spring, its familiar call marking its return from central Africa. After the breeding season, the cuckoo begins its long journey south flying across the Sahara to winter around the Congo rainforest before migrating north again with the coming of spring.
