Blackbird bird call

François Morel, founder of Quelle Est Belle Company, has been developing bird calls for more than 40 years. Each whistle is crafted from sustainable local wood sourced near his atelier, where he creates his unique and beautiful calls that help us learn to communicate with birds.

We have had the honour of collaborating with François to develop lacquered whistles using an Urushi lacquering process influenced by techniques found in Japan and China. The resin is moisture-resistant, mould-resistant, and food-safe. Our choice of Urushi came from our research and development into finding a non-toxic paint free from harsh chemicals. Each whistle is hand painted in BOWER’s small atelier and takes around one month to cure and set.

Blackbird

The blackbird has one of the most melodic and beautiful calls in the animal world. It can be heard all year in the UK, with numbers rising during the winter season due to the arrival of migratory birds from Scandinavia. Its song is heard most frequently during the mating season.

In Celtic traditions, blackbirds were symbols of prophecy and otherworldly insight. It was believed that hearing a blackbird sing meant the veil between the human world and the spirit world was thin, making it an ideal time to listen for messages from beyond.
