Curlew bird call

  • François Morel, founder of Quelle Est Belle Company, has been developing bird calls for more than 40 years. Each whistle is crafted from sustainable local wood sourced near his atelier, where he creates his unique and beautiful calls that help us learn to communicate with birds.

We have had the honour of collaborating with François to develop lacquered whistles using an Urushi  lacquering process influenced by techniques found in Japan and China. The resin is moisture-resistant, mould-resistant, and food-safe. Our choice of Urushi came from our research and development into finding a non-toxic paint free from harsh chemicals. Each whistle is hand painted in BOWER’s small atelier and takes around one month to cure and set.

Curlew

The curlew is Europe’s largest wading bird, found on estuaries in winter and on moors in summer. Its call is a haunting, bubbling “cur-lee, cur-lee” sound, which at one time was linked to the underworld, though curlews have also been seen as messengers. Their call was used as a warning of incoming storms from the sea, as well as a signal for fishermen to turn for home. When travelling, Celtic saints lost in mist and fog at sea believed the call of the curlew would guide their small boats safely to shore.
