Skylark bird call

  • François Morel, founder of Quelle Est Belle Company, has been developing bird calls for more than 40 years. Each whistle is crafted from sustainable local wood sourced near his atelier, where he creates his unique and beautiful calls that help us learn to communicate with birds.

We have had the honour of collaborating with François to develop lacquered whistles using an Urushi  lacquering process influenced by techniques found in Japan and China. The resin is moisture-resistant, mould-resistant, and food-safe. Our choice of Urushi came from our research and development into finding a non-toxic paint free from harsh chemicals. Each whistle is hand painted in BOWER’s small atelier and takes around one month to cure and set.

Skylark

Once a common sound the skylarks population is sadly in decline and is marked as red in the RSPB’s population status.

The skylark’s song is a long, flowing, warbling trill that pours from the sky, sometimes lasting several minutes. Uplifting, intricate, and beautifully melodic, it has inspired poets and musicians for centuries. The male sings as he rises in a steep, fluttering climb, hovering high above the fields and filling the air with music for minutes at a time.

In Shetland, the skylark is sometimes known as the “laeverik” and its nest is considered sacred. A curse was traditionally invoked against anyone who violated its sanctity.
